In traditional buildings it is crucial to use lime mortar, whether as render, plaster, pointing or as a building mortar. The reason being, lime was used traditionally and historically.

The problem with using cement is that it is an impervious material and so traps moisture once let in. Subsequent problems that arise might be damp, plaster and or render failure, softer stone like lime stone or sand stone might deteriorate.

For internal plastering we advocate using fat/putty lime. For pointing and building we advocate using quick lime, otherwise known as hot lime due to its exothermic reaction (heat) when slaked.

These “airlimes” are highly breathable and so can regulate the moisture that is in a building.
